The Whole Egg for Parents: Feeding Your Baby, Your Kids, and their Microbiota

In this new four-session series, I’m honored to join Mary Esther Malloy to teach and explore the latest in nutrition and health essentials for parents. Mary Esther is a childbirth and parenting expert with an M.A. in anthropology. She is the founder and director of Mindful Birth NY, offering support to families in New York City from pregnancy through parenthood.

This class is a great opportunity to take a deep dive into nutrition, eating and health, especially when it comes to decisions about feeding your baby, your kids and yourself.

Course Description for Feeding Your Baby, Kids, and Yourself

Session One: The Microbiota

We start with perhaps the most important aspect to overall health — the microbiota.

  • How was your baby born?

  • Establishing a healthy gut from day one, and onward

  • The missing microbe: B. Infantis, breastfeeding and the microbiota, milk banks, donors, and better formulas

  • Nighttime parenting to support breastfeeding and maximize rest

  • Bathing, soaps, antimicrobials

Session Two: The Perils of “Baby Food” and “Kid Food”

We explore another key aspect to your baby’s life-long health — how to introduce solids, what foods are best, and setting your baby up to like and embrace whole foods from the start. We will discuss The Whole Egg Theory and how to navigate the tricky terrain of our processed food supply.

  • How do “Baby Food” and “Kid Food” nourish the wrong bacteria in your child’s gut? (how to avoid additives, sugars, poor quality vegetable oils, refined grains, and pesticide residues)

  • The importance of fats for your baby’s development and overall health

  • What are whole foods for babies and young children?

  • Encouraging un-picky eating (and helping picky eaters expand their palates!)

  • Navigating sugar and children

  • Getting practical: bone broths made easy and other ideas for including nutrient-dense foods in the family meal

Session Three: Creating Safe Food Environments for Our Children

Here, we focus on plastics and other environmental stressors for babies, children, and the whole family.

  • Why are plastics and other environmental chemicals a problem for our children? What does hormone disruption mean?

  • Are there safe plastics? What does BPA-Free really mean?

  • Getting Practical: Parenting without plastic; how do we create safe environments for our children?

Session Four: Creating Greener Families and Stronger Community

In this session, we think together as parents about the role we play in creating not just healthy families, but strong communities and a healthier planet. We’ll discuss ideas like meal planning, shopping for foods, cooking, and how we might share and pool resources in our communities.

SIGN UP: We Will Meet via Zoom and Explore

  • Establishing a diverse microbiota as a foundation for health throughout life, beginning at birth, through infanthood, childhood, and beyond
